Rembrandt's Wife

Victorian Opera — 2009

Rembrandt's Wife is a chamber opera composed by Andrew Ford with a libretto by Sue Smith that was commissioned and premiered by Victorian Opera at the Merlyn Theatre, CUB Malthouse in April 2009. The work dramatizes episodes from the life of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn, exploring his relationships with three significant women — his late wife Saskia, his former lover Geertje Dircx and his muse Hendrickje Stoffels — through a richly psychological and lyrical musical language. Directed by Talya Masel and conducted by Richard Gill, the production was recognised with a Green Room Award for New Australian Opera.
